The Best Places to Go in Charleston: Our Guest Guide Picks for a Month-Long Stay

21 Savage Street, a historic home with a red door south of Broad in Charleston

Quick answer: The best of Charleston is spread across the peninsula, the islands, and the neighborhoods in between. For breakfast, start at Millers All Day or Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit on King Street. For a night you will remember, book FIG exactly 28 days out, or line up early at Chubby Fish, which takes no reservations. Spend weekends on Sullivan’s Island, Folly Beach, or Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, and catch live music at the Charleston Pour House on James Island. These picks come from the Proper Guest Guide at guide.properstays.com, the same guide we share with Proper Stays guests.

Why a month changes how you see Charleston

A weekend visitor gets King Street and a carriage ride. A 30 night stay gets you a regular coffee order, a favorite oyster bar, and a standing Saturday at the farmers market. That is the point of staying longer, and it is why we built the Guest Guide around places we send our own families, not a tourist checklist. Here is how we would spend the month.

Week one: learn your block

Start with mornings. Millers All Day (120 King St) mills its grits in-house and serves pie for breakfast. Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit (476 1/2 King St) is walk-in only and worth it for the country ham biscuit. If you like your espresso serious, Second State Coffee on Beaufain Street roasts its own single-origin beans, and Welton’s Tiny Bakeshop on upper King is tiny with an outsized reputation, so go early for the kouign-amann.

For everyday lunches, Leon’s Oyster Shop (698 King St) does fried chicken and chargrilled oysters in a converted body shop, and Bon Banh Mi on Spring Street is fast, cheap, and consistently good. For barbecue, Lewis Barbecue on North Nassau Street carves Texas-style brisket to order, open daily from 11 a.m.

Saturday belongs to the Charleston Farmers Market in Marion Square, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., running through November 21 this year (City of Charleston).

The tables worth planning for

Charleston rewards people who book ahead. FIG (232 Meeting St) releases tables at noon Eastern, 28 days out to the same day of the week, for parties of up to six; bar seats are held for walk-ins (FIG). Chubby Fish (252 Coming St) is the opposite: no reservations, about 40 seats, and a No. 21 ranking on North America’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2026. Arrive when the doors open.

A few more we point guests to again and again:

Weekends on the water

Every island has its own personality. On Sullivan’s Island, eat upstairs at The Obstinate Daughter or grab burgers at Poe’s Tavern steps from the sand. Folly Beach is looser: Lost Dog Cafe for breakfast, Chico Feo for open-air cooking and live music. In Mount Pleasant, Red’s Ice House and Tavern & Table sit right on Shem Creek, where you can watch for dolphins at dusk.

Want to get on the water yourself? Seabreeze Rentals at 50 Immigration St rents kayaks and paddleboards from the marina, and Island Cabana Bar at the same address is the easy drink afterward.

Nights out, from rooftops to listening rooms

Golden hour starts at Citrus Club, eight floors above Meeting Street with the best sunset view downtown. For cocktails, The Gin Joint on East Bay will build a drink around your mood. For wine, Bin 152 on King Street pours more than 150 bottles with cheese and charcuterie, open late.

For music, the Charleston Pour House on Maybank Highway runs two stages and a deck, and the Charleston Music Hall fills a restored 1849 train depot with something almost every night.

October is the best month to be here

If your stay starts this fall, you picked well. South Carolina’s 2026-2027 recreational shellfish season opened October 1 (SCDNR), which means oyster roasts are popping up all over the Lowcountry. The weather cools, the ocean is still warm, and the summer crowds are gone. It is the stretch of year our team would pick for ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best places to go in Charleston, SC?
For food, King Street and the upper peninsula hold most of the city’s best restaurants, including FIG, Chubby Fish, The Ordinary, and Leon’s Oyster Shop. For beaches, Sullivan’s Island, Folly Beach, and Isle of Palms are all an easy drive from downtown. The full list lives at guide.properstays.com.

How far ahead should I book dinner in Charleston?
For the hardest tables, a month. FIG opens reservations 28 days out at noon Eastern. Chubby Fish takes no reservations at all, so arrive at opening.

What is there to do in Charleston for a month?
Build a routine: a regular coffee shop, the Saturday farmers market in Marion Square, weekend beach days on the islands, and a standing night out. A month gives you time to see Mount Pleasant, James Island, and Park Circle, not just downtown.

When is oyster season in Charleston?
South Carolina’s 2026-2027 recreational shellfish season opened October 1, 2026 (SCDNR). Fall and winter are peak oyster roast season.
